Study in Canada: What Truly Determines Success Is Not Grades, but Strategy

Program Details

Canada is often misunderstood as simply an “easy immigration destination.”

However, in reality, what determines a student’s long-term success is not just admission to a university, but the overall strategy behind their study plan.

We once worked with a student from Shandong Province who graduated from a non-top university with a GPA of around 75% in marketing. His IELTS score was 6.5. With this profile, applying directly to top research-based master’s programs in Canada—especially in business—would have been highly competitive.

Initially, his parents were focused on university rankings. However, after detailed discussions, we helped them reconsider their priorities: Was the goal a prestigious name, or a sustainable pathway for long-term development?

We eventually guided him toward a public college postgraduate diploma program in business. The curriculum was highly practical, including courses in digital marketing, market analysis, and industry collaboration. Importantly, the program qualified for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).

During his studies, he secured an internship through a co-op program and later transitioned into a full-time role after graduation. He obtained a three-year work permit and has already submitted his application through Express Entry.

For undergraduate applications, Canadian universities generally expect strong academic performance in high school, typically above 80%, with top institutions requiring even higher. IELTS scores of 6.5 (with no band below 6.0) are commonly required.

For postgraduate programs, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree with a GPA between 75% and 85%. Competitive programs, especially in business and engineering, may require GMAT or GRE scores. Supporting materials such as a Statement of Purpose, recommendation letters, and relevant experience also play a crucial role.

However, the key to success lies not in meeting these requirements alone, but in understanding how Canada’s education system connects to its employment and immigration pathways.

When properly planned, studying in Canada is not just about earning a degree—it is about building a long-term future.
